Real moments in the surf captured on 35mm film

1 roll of film + small wave days = nostalgic fun

Cornwall surfing on film

Colour, black and white, on land and in the sea

In a world where AI and perfectly curated images seem to dominate, I’ve found a lot of joy in capturing surf photography on film.

36 shots. No preview on the back of the camera. Just dial in the settings, shoot, cross fingers and see what comes back from the lab.

That’s where the beauty lies.

Film just lands differently. It’s raw and authentic. An image captured on film has a certain look and feel to it. From the tones and grain to the emotive nostalgic feelings of analogue times when we had to wait to see the end result.

No instant gratification but the excited anticipation of what I’ve captured. The forgotten ‘I forgot I took that one’ moment to the ‘wow’ of a nailed shot (or a light leak that lands just right!). And the laughs over the joyful mistakes. Fortunately they’re rare but it’s all part of the process!

From drawn back shots from the land with a 90’s Canon camera to in-water shots on an iconic 80’s Nikonos V, I capture the heart of surfing in Cornwall in a truly authentic way.

No post-process edits or adjustments. Just what me, the camera and a simple roll of film captured at that moment.
